A Bright Spot: Downtown Brooklyn Gets Lit for the 2020 Holiday Season

Downtown Brooklyn Partnership unveils new holiday lights to brighten the neighborhood in time for Thanksgiving

November 17, 2020

BROOKLYN (November 19, 2020) – Downtown Brooklyn Partnership (DBP) announced today a new design for its district holiday lights for the 2020 season covering more streets in Downtown Brooklyn. The new lights will make their big debut on Thursday, Nov. 19, at DBP’s annual DTBK Gets Lit! celebration.

Although the event is scaled down this year in light of COVID, the neighborhood is still invited to Albee Square to enjoy socially distanced performances by The Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir, local marching band BK United, musical sets from DJ Mike Doelo, and hot chocolate from Al B’s.

“After a challenging year and a lot of time spent indoors, we hope that our brand-new holiday lights will help bring joy to the neighborhood as Brooklynites celebrate the festive season,” said Regina Myer, President of Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. “Our outdoor spaces are more important than ever before, so we are excited to unveil a new twist on our longstanding holiday tradition of lighting up Downtown Brooklyn.”

The new lighting program covers a larger area of Downtown Brooklyn than in previous years and features a beautiful new design from Totem/Fantastica, which builds off the signature seasonal lights Downtown Brooklyn has showcased for nearly a decade. Two distinct units of lights have been constructed using lighter materials capable of seamlessly combining to form a variety of configurations. Structural elements are painted black to disappear into the night, drawing the eye towards the colorful lights above.

The Flatbush Ave, Adams Street, Boerum Place, Willoughby Street, Court Street, and Livingston Street corridors will all showcase the new pole decorations in an array of colors, while Fulton Mall is decorated with skylines that float above the roadway like ribbons of light. Albee Square will once again host DBP’s Christmas Tree and Menorah.

In order to give the holiday lights a refresh this year, DBP issued an RFP for new fabrication and installation firms for the project, and following a competitive selection process awarded the contract to a team comprised of Hudson Solutions for fabrication and Debaro Consulting for installation.
