Brookfield Properties and Arts Brookfield unveil “/light_wave” by Anne Vieux on the exterior of 15 MetroTech Center
"Dancing across large panes of glass, the rhythmic swirls of Vieux’s installation “/light_wave" lead the viewer on an animated journey..."
July 01, 2019
Anne Vieux’s swirling imagery, created by scanning light-refracting holographic paper and manipulating it by hand as it prints through a flatbed printer, produces colorfully vivid patterns rooted in both the virtual and physical worlds. Dancing across large panes of glass, the rhythmic swirls of Vieux’s installation /light_wave lead the viewer on an animated journey down the exterior windows of 15 MetroTech Center. Embedded in this path is her fascination with computer coding and physical traces of digital information. Just as her creative methods join the digital and corporeal realms, our own relationship to technology becomes evermore portable and vital to our daily tasks. Through the simple act of walking by the 15 MetroTech Center windows, Vieux presents us with a space to contemplate technology’s physical nature and its place in our lives.
ABOUT ANNE VIEUX
Anne Vieux (b. 1985, Michigan) received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and her BFA in Painting and Art History at the Kansas City Art Institute. Vieux’s work has been exhibited in solo shows at The Hole, Annka Kultys, Good Weather, and The Journal. Recently she has shown in group exhibitions at the Newcomb Art Museum, Providence College Galleries, National Arts Club, LMAK Gallery, Silvermine Arts Center, Brooklyn Academy of Music, Brand New Gallery and Cranbrook Museum of Art. Her artist book works are included in the library collections of numerous universities and the libraries of the MoMA and The Met. Her work explores the effects of light, scale, and materiality on abstract painting. Her process involves scanning holographic paper then pushing the limits of the image data through extreme zooming, warping, and repetition. Her paintings exist as part of the great tradition of using tools wrong (here a digital scanner), and this marriage of virtual image, physical materiality, and painterly finesse ultimately seeks the tension between the physical and digital realms.
