Breathing Pavilion: A Weekly Music Series | Melanie Charles
About the series:
Featuring wind and percussion jazz musicians in meditative sets, solo artists interact with Ekene Ijeoma’s immersive art installation, Breathing Pavilion. Designed to promote interconnectedness and self-reflection, Breathing Pavilion offers a safe and peaceful sanctuary at a time when many have experienced hardship or loss.
Melanie Charles is a Brooklyn-born singer-songwriter, actress, and flutist of Haitian descent, with a creative fluidity spanning jazz, soul, experimental, and Haitian roots music. Her first full-length recording, “The Girl with the Green Shoes,” has established Charles as a progressive voice in jazz, garnering two features in The New York Times, and a NPR profile by Nate Chinen hailing her as a “young jazz artist you need to know.” The Village Voice writes, “there’s an uncanny cohesion to Charles’ music…you can hear her collaging her musical DNA into jazz-studded multi-instrumentalism and dipping a toe into the experimental.” Charles kicked off 2021 with a scintillating NPR Tiny Desk from Home performance for Black History Month and is set to perform with Wynton Marsalis and Jazz At the Lincoln Center in late March.
