SUMMARY:Bang on a Can: Long Play Festival at Roulette
DESCRIPTION:Five performances in one day at Roulette\, as a part of Long Play Festival 2026. \n12:00 pm – David Longstreth\n2:00 pm – Michael Brook Cobalt Blue\n7:00 pm – David Lang: Mystery Sonatas with Emma Meinrenken\n8:00 pm – Julia Wolfe Anthracite Fields with the Bang on a Can All-Stars and Trinity Choir\n10:30 pm – Contemporaneous plays Gavin Bryars Jesus’ Blood and The Sinking of the Titanic \nDavid Longstreth is the founder and songwriter behind Dirty Projectors\, a mainstay in the pop and indie rock worlds since the band’s inception in 2002. \nCobalt Blue is an album by the Canadian musician Michael Brook\, released in 1992. Brook supported the album with a North American tour\, playing some shows with John Cale. The album was reissued in 1999\, with an additional disc of live material. \nOriginally premiered as part of a Carnegie Hall residency\, mystery sonatas are inspired by a remarkable set of violin pieces from the 1670s by Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber. Rather than the original fiery sonatas depicting Jesus’ life story\, Lang created intimate spiritual works\, divided into ‘joy\,’ ‘sorrow\,’ and ‘glory\,’ performed here by virtuoso Emma Meinrenken. \nLong interested in labor in America\, Julia Wolfe dove deeply into the coal mining country of her childhood for Anthracite Fields. In researching the piece\, she went down into coal mines\, visited patch towns and the local museums\, and interviewed retired miners. Wolfe says\, “My aim with Anthracite Fields is to honor the people who persevered and endured in the Pennsylvania Anthracite coal region during a time when the industry fueled the nation\, and to reveal a bit about who we are as American workers.” \nOne of the experimental double-bassist’s best-known early works is Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet\, which uses a recorded loop of a homeless man singing an improvised fragment\, with rich string harmonies layered on top. A recording of the piece was made in 1993 with Tom Waits. Here\, Contemporaneous brings the piece to life again. \n\nYou can get access to this show with a Long Play Pass. \n\nBang on a Can presents the 5th year of Long Play\, a four-day destination music festival\, presented from Thursday\, April 30 through Sunday\, May 3\, 2026. SUMMARY:Bang on a Can: Long Play Festival at BRIC Ballroom
DESCRIPTION:Five performances in one day at BRIC Ballroom\, as a part of Long Play Festival 2026. \n1:00 pm – Michael Gordon Trance with Ensemble Signal\n3:00 pm – Dither and Friends play James Tenney\n5:30 pm – Lucy Railton\n8:00 pm – Mamtos\n10:30 pm –Melaine Dalibert The Vermilion Hours \nGordon says\, “Trance began after a dream I had in July 1994 while I was in residence at the Djerassi Foundation just south of San Francisco.” Brad Lubman: Conductor // Paul Coleman: Sound Director // Jessica Schmitz\, Amir Farsi: Flute/Pan Pipes // David Crowell\, Ed Rosenberg III\, Ken Thomson: Saxophones //  David Friend\, Luke Poeppel\, Lisa Moore: Synthesizer // Red Wierenga: Accordion // Taylor Levine: Guitar // Greg Chudzik: Bass Guitar // Doug Perkins: Percussion // Olivia De Prato: Violin // Lauren Radnofsky: Cello // Seneca Black\, Tim Leopold\, Changhyun Cha\, Kevin Fitzgerald:  Trumpet // Jen Baker\, Lauren Galarraga\, Colin Babcock\, Julie Dombrowski: Trombone \nNew York-based electric guitar quartet Dither and Friends performs works by the great James Tenney\, who is known for revolutionizing algorithmic composition\, plunderphonics\, spectral music\, and microtonal systems. \nLong Play hosts the first live performance in the US of Lucy Railton’s Blue Veil. Blue Veil invites listeners into the realm of precision-tuned states of resonance: states made manifest through Railton’s careful traversal of her cello’s most subtle acoustic characteristics as they harmonically interlock with the mind’s embodied modalities of attention and imagination. \nMatmos is Drew Daniel and M.C. Schmidt. They are respected\, innovative auteurs in the world of electronic music and sampling culture making music out of a wildly heterogeneous set of objects and sources\, manipulated into surprisingly accessible forms. The result is a model of electronic composition providing the listener with entry points into densely allusive\, baroque recordings that have the direct sensory immediacy of pop music. \nFrench pianist and composer Melaine Dalibert has been exploring the field of generative music for nearly two decades\, developing “paper algorithms” that never sacrifice poetry and great harmonic subtlety. His “vermilion hour\,” a record project initially conceived with David Sylvian (2025)\, will be presented for the first time in the USA in its instrumental version\, combining piano and synthesizer.
DESCRIPTION:Three performances in one day at BRIC Ballroom\, as a part of Long Play Festival 2026. \n1:00 pm – Anzû Quartet and Friends play Ken Thomson\n3:30 pm – Exceptet performs Vangelis L’Apocalypse des animaux\n6:00 pm – Florent Ghys and Mantra Percussion with opener Owen Weaver \n“Each project from the composer and multi-reed player Ken Thomson has been good news\,” wrote The New York Times about the Bang on a Call All-Stars clarinetist and composer’s newest co-led project\, the Anzû Quartet.  Anzû Quartet\, a collaboration of musicians from Bang on a Can\, Eighth Blackbird\, Mivos Quartet and Bearthoven\, play the New York premiere Ken Thomson’s “Uneasy” (released on Cantaloupe Music 2025)\, then add to their forces to play Thomson’s 2018 clarinet quintet “Pall.”  Plus the US premiere of “Keep Your Head Down” (2026) for bass clarinet and piano. \nExceptet performs Vangelis’s pioneering score to the first episode of Frédéric Rossif’s 1973 docuseries\, L’Apocalypse des animaux\, live-to-film\, arranged by clarinetist Chuck Furlong. Vangelis’s music accompanying this documentary has become a cult classic\, but to our knowledge\, this Rossif series has never been screened in the US—certainly not with a live chamber ensemble! Featuring material that doesn’t exist anywhere else\, this performance brings to life both a classic film and its score. \nZemblanity and Other Serendipities sonifies visual accidents\, whether fortuitous or deliberately staged. Written for small percussion instruments\, electronics\, and video\, the piece is a series of uninterrupted short movements\, with video starting in bucolic downtown St. Louis and finishing among the playful trees of Oregon. The piece weaves ordinary moments into rhythmic and harmonic material\, transforming incidental gestures into musical structures that shift between inevitability and unexpected discovery. Owen Weaver opens with Same Face!. \n\nYou can get access to this show with a Long Play Pass. \n\nBang on a Can presents the 5th year of Long Play\, a four-day destination music festival\, presented from Thursday\, April 30 through Sunday\, May 3\, 2026. They lean into the challenges of the instrument and allow patience and melody to guide their process. \nMiles Okazaki is a NYC-based guitarist whose approach to the guitar is described by the New York Times as “utterly contemporary\, free from the expectations of what it means to play a guitar in a group setting — not just in jazz\, but any kind.” His six-album recording of the complete compositions of Thelonious Monk for solo guitar is an unprecedented project that Nate Chinen called “the six-string equivalent of a free solo climb up El Capitan.” \n\nBang on a Can presents the 5th year of Long Play\, a four-day destination music festival\, presented from Thursday\, April 30 through Sunday\, May 3\, 2026. The live singer’s voice intertwines with pre-recordings of the other two parts\, mostly without text\, but with the occasional blowing in of O’Hara’s “Wind.” \nLong Play presents Seances by Trevor Dunn’s Trio-Convulsant avec Folie à Quatre. Two previous albums had been released by Trio-Convulsant (Mary Halvorsen\, Ches Smith\, and Trevor Dunn).
