SUMMARY:AAPI Month: Intergenerational Hula Class
DESCRIPTION:Discover how movement connects us to our environment\, our stories\, and one another. This intergenerational class—designed for children (8+) through adults of all ages and abilities—brings together the flowing\, imaginative spirit of Island Flow with the grounding\, heart‑centered practice of Hula Noho (Seated Hula).\n\nInspired by Hawaiian\, Asian\, and Pacific Island cultures\, participants explore a blend of standing and seated movement\, martial‑arts‑influenced techniques\, and the expressive foundations of hula and mele. Whether moving on your feet or seated\, we honor the balance of respect and responsibility that guides island life\, learning what it means to care for ourselves and our community.

SUMMARY:Bang on a Can: Long Play Festival at BRIC Ballroom
DESCRIPTION:Three performances in one day at BRIC Ballroom\, as a part of Long Play Festival 2026. \n1:00 pm – Anzû Quartet and Friends play Ken Thomson\n3:30 pm – Exceptet performs Vangelis L’Apocalypse des animaux\n6:00 pm – Florent Ghys and Mantra Percussion with opener Owen Weaver \n“Each project from the composer and multi-reed player Ken Thomson has been good news\,” wrote The New York Times about the Bang on a Call All-Stars clarinetist and composer’s newest co-led project\, the Anzû Quartet.  Anzû Quartet\, a collaboration of musicians from Bang on a Can\, Eighth Blackbird\, Mivos Quartet and Bearthoven\, play the New York premiere Ken Thomson’s “Uneasy” (released on Cantaloupe Music 2025)\, then add to their forces to play Thomson’s 2018 clarinet quintet “Pall.”  Plus the US premiere of “Keep Your Head Down” (2026) for bass clarinet and piano. \nExceptet performs Vangelis’s pioneering score to the first episode of Frédéric Rossif’s 1973 docuseries\, L’Apocalypse des animaux\, live-to-film\, arranged by clarinetist Chuck Furlong. Vangelis’s music accompanying this documentary has become a cult classic\, but to our knowledge\, this Rossif series has never been screened in the US—certainly not with a live chamber ensemble! Featuring material that doesn’t exist anywhere else\, this performance brings to life both a classic film and its score. \nZemblanity and Other Serendipities sonifies visual accidents\, whether fortuitous or deliberately staged. Written for small percussion instruments\, electronics\, and video\, the piece is a series of uninterrupted short movements\, with video starting in bucolic downtown St. Louis and finishing among the playful trees of Oregon. The piece weaves ordinary moments into rhythmic and harmonic material\, transforming incidental gestures into musical structures that shift between inevitability and unexpected discovery. Owen Weaver opens with Same Face!. \n\nYou can get access to this show with a Long Play Pass. \n\nBang on a Can presents the 5th year of Long Play\, a four-day destination music festival\, presented from Thursday\, April 30 through Sunday\, May 3\, 2026. SUMMARY:Bang on a Can: Long Play Festival at BRIC Stoop (FREE)
DESCRIPTION:Two FREE performances in one day at BRIC Stoop\, as a part of Long Play Festival 2026. \n2:00pm – Kalia Vandever\n4:30pm – Miles Okazaki plays Thelonious Monk \nKalia Vandever is a trombonist and composer whose approach to the trombone is distinctive and defined by their sonorous tone and lyrical improvisational voice. They lean into the challenges of the instrument and allow patience and melody to guide their process. \nMiles Okazaki is a NYC-based guitarist whose approach to the guitar is described by the New York Times as “utterly contemporary\, free from the expectations of what it means to play a guitar in a group setting — not just in jazz\, but any kind.” His six-album recording of the complete compositions of Thelonious Monk for solo guitar is an unprecedented project that Nate Chinen called “the six-string equivalent of a free solo climb up El Capitan.” \n\nBang on a Can presents the 5th year of Long Play\, a four-day destination music festival\, presented from Thursday\, April 30 through Sunday\, May 3\, 2026. SUMMARY:Bang on a Can: Long Play Festival at Roulette

The live singer’s voice intertwines with pre-recordings of the other two parts\, mostly without text\, but with the occasional blowing in of O’Hara’s “Wind.” \nLong Play presents Seances by Trevor Dunn’s Trio-Convulsant avec Folie à Quatre. Two previous albums had been released by Trio-Convulsant (Mary Halvorsen\, Ches Smith\, and Trevor Dunn). In this third installment Trevor adds a string and winds quartet with cellist Tomeka Reid\, the violin/viola of Carla Kihlstedt\, flutist Anna Webber and Oscar Noriega on bass clarinet and clarinet. \nThe Bang on a Can All-Stars premiere a brand-new arrangement of Glassworks\, via Glass’ longtime collaborator Michael Riesman.
