SUMMARY:Jazz Ain't Boring
DESCRIPTION:Jazz Ain’t Boring is a live music experience that explores how jazz continues to shape modern sound and dance culture. Blending DJ sets with live band performance\, the program moves fluidly between classic jazz recordings\, contemporary interpretations\, and the hip-hop\, house\, and soul records they inspired. \nThroughout the evening\, DJs and musicians trade energy—moving from Miles Davis\, John Coltrane\, and Lou Donaldson into the records that sampled them\, from A Tribe Called Quest and Wu-Tang Clan to Mary J. Blige\, Kanye West\, and beyond. \nThe result is a dynamic listening and dance-floor experience that treats jazz not as museum music\, but as a living foundation for groove\, rhythm\, and celebration. \nCurated and hosted by #SampleSaleMusic members DJ Dottie Womack\, Reg Wyns\, Tai Allen\, Emanuel Ruffler\, and Ian Forde\, the program highlights jazz’s enduring influence while inviting the audience to move\, listen\, and connect across generations of sound.

SUMMARY:Dreamcrusher and Friends
DESCRIPTION:*This performance will include strobing lights and haze effects. Viewer discretion is advised* \nRoulette Resident Dreamcrusher presents SUITE III\, the third installment of their on-going SUITE record series\, and a more urgent and emotional music event. As the Dreamcrusher project matures\, the need to be more impactful in ethos and wonderment rather than genre or style has become the main goal. The intense nature of the music is fueled by heavy pulsing electronically generated rhythms in conjunction with nostalgic sampling and hypnotically warm melodies. Using noise and fringe music as a template\, coloring outside the lines ‘kaleidoscopically’ to create lush musical landscapes onto the grounded harsh topography of reality.

SUMMARY:Hamza Akram Qawwal & Brothers: Sufi Songs of Pakistan (RBA)
DESCRIPTION:Pakistan’s award-winning ensemble Hamza Akram Qawwal & Brothers return to Roulette with their acclaimed and riveting interpretation of qawwali\, the ecstatic improvisational Sufi vocal tradition made famous in the West by the late Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. The group builds a state of ecstasy through rhythmic handclapping\, drumming\, and powerful call-and-response vocals with songs ranging from 13th century mystical Persian poems to more recent Punjabi poems that speak of the intoxication of divine love. \nThe group are grandsons of the revered Munshi Raziuddin and represent the twenty-sixth generation of the seven centuries-old Qawwal Bachon ka Gharana of Delhi founded by Saamat bin Ibrahim\, the first qawwal of the subcontinent and principal student of mystic Amir Khusrau. Hamza has studied with maestro Naseeruddin Saami\, as well as with his uncle\, Fareed Ayaz Qawwal\, with whom he and his brothers have toured.

SUMMARY:"How Black Music Took Over the World" with Melvin Gibbs and Stephon Alexander
DESCRIPTION:Join FourOneOne and Sound+Science in celebration of producer\, bassist\, and author Melvin Gibbs’ new book How Black Music Took Over The World\, which will be published by Basic Books on April 14th. Gibbs will be in conversation with Stephon Alexander\, theoretical cosmologist\, jazz musician\, and author of The Jazz of Physics and Fear of a Black Universe. This event kicks off FourOneOne’s multipart residency with Gibbs\, which explores the themes of the book through a series of conversations and live performances. \nIn How Black Music Took Over the World\, Gibbs discusses the musical inheritance of Africa. Beginning with two rhythmic building blocks he calls the cell and the frame\, Gibbs shows how those tools can transport listeners to “a realm where sounds become vehicles for human movement.” Reforged in the African diaspora in the Americas\, they are played today on church organs\, electric guitars\, computers\, telephones\, or a simple gourd. Kool & the Gang called Black musicians the “scientists of sound”—and Gibbs shows how they discovered the world’s music.

SUMMARY:The Met in HD: El Último Sueño de Frida y Diego
DESCRIPTION:The Metropolitan Opera’s 2025–26 Live in HD season comes to a close with a live transmission of American composer Gabriela Lena Frank’s first opera\, a magical-realist portrait of Mexican painters Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera\, with libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Nilo Cruz. A reversal of the Orpheus and Euridice myth\, the story depicts Frida\, sung by leading mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard\, leaving the underworld on the Day of the Dead and reuniting with Diego\, portrayed by baritone Carlos Álvarez. The famously feuding pair briefly relive their tumultuous love\, embracing both the passion and the pain before bidding the land of the living a final farewell.
