SUMMARY:First Novel Friday: Liar's Dice\, Abundance\, and Odessa
DESCRIPTION:On the first Friday of the month\, join The Center for Fiction as they celebrate and launch a selection of the best debut novels published today. Be among the first to discover boundary-pushing and world-expanding work from exciting new voices in fiction. \nKick off the weekend with a happy hour at the cash bar for ticket holders in our Members Lounge starting at 6pm. Then\, at 7pm\, the party will move to the auditorium for readings from the featured debut novelists\, followed by a short moderated conversation. (If auditorium seating reaches capacity\, guests will be invited to watch the livestream of the readings and conversation on a large screen in our Members Lounge.) The party continues with book signings and signature cocktails to round out the night. Go home with something new—a book\, a friend\, a favorite Friday night tradition. \nThis month\, The Center for Fiction welcomes debut novelists Juliet Faithfull (Liar’s Dice)\, Hafeez Lakhani (Abundance)\, and Gabrielle Sher (Odessa). All three featured books portray families torn apart by forces beyond their control\, as well as the interplay between grief and illness across decades and continents. Naeem Murr\, award-winning author of Every Exit Brings You Home\, will join as the evening’s moderator. \nTwo in-person ticket options are offered: the $5 Community Ticket and the $40+ Supporter Ticket. Both provide the same access\, but if you’re able\, we kindly suggest registering for the Supporter Ticket to help sustain the programs for emerging writers. You can also attend online by purchasing the access to livestream at $5.

His EP Live earned praise from Jazz Right Now and The Quietus for its “dazzling collaged pieces that ricochet between improvised passages and written material”. His debut LP Odu: Vibration II\, praised by Pitchfork and named one of NPR’s Best New Albums\, reimagines a journey through Plato’s Cave. \nNEA Jazz Master Billy Hart commands the whole spectrum of musical possibility: His drumming is still as fresh as tomorrow. Early on\, Hart performed in D.C. with soul artists such as Otis Redding and Sam and Dave\, and then later with Buck Hill and Shirley Horn. Hart has recorded with Herbie Hancock\, Wayne Shorter\, Miles Davis\, Stan Getz\, McCoy Tyner\, and most other modern jazz legends. The Billy Hart Quartet includes Mark Turner on saxophone\, Ethan Iverson on piano\, and Ben Street on bass. \nBlankFor.ms is a Brooklyn-based artist who creates richly textured music with degraded tapes\, analog circuitry\, and spinet piano. He composes for film and video games\, with contributions including Academy Award Best Picture-nominated film Nickel Boys. In this collaboration\, he is joined by MacArthur Fellow pianist\, composer\, and educator Jason Moran and innovative drummer Marcus Gilmore–two of the most highly-regarded jazz performers of our time. \n\nYou can get access to this show with a Long Play Pass or single-event ticket from Roulette. \n\nBang on a Can presents the 5th year of Long Play\, a four-day destination music festival\, presented from Thursday\, April 30 through Sunday\, May 3\, 2026. SUMMARY:Moby Dick
DESCRIPTION:Regarded as one of the greatest of all American novels\, Herman Melville’s Moby Dick comes to BAM in a new production created by the iconic avant-garde director Robert Wilson for Germany’s Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus. This classic tale of obsession and vengeance becomes enigmatic and new in Wilson’s mix of tart dialogue with indie-rock riffs and soaring ballads by British singer-songwriter Anna Calvi.
